"SCULPTING ANIMALS"

"Foals at Plum Creek"

"We all know art is a form of expression.  My goal is to touch someone's emotions, to have them feel what I might feel in a particular bronze.  That isn't always,an easy task when sculpting animals.  Some of their actions and emotions are very subtle.  You really have to observe and study the animal to sculpt life into it.  Consequently, most of my subjects are animals that I am very fond of or have worked with a great deal.  For example, equines are a big part of my recreational life.  I feel like I really know and love these animals, and think this is reflected in my work."

" This session with Ohio artist, Don Getz, will focus on how to develop a watercolor journal for traveling or simply painting en plein air with watercolors. Don will take you through step by step the pen and ink sketching and laying in the trasparent watercolor washes to create a lasting and wonderful "Watercolor Journal" of you own."

These journals are a great and simple way to capture memories of your travels, hikes, and even just local scenes." This is a great way to paint en plein air on your journies without all the equipment of oil painting when traveling. A great way to capture your scenes and return to the studio to enlarge them into larger works either in watercolor or oil. Don will do demo's and work alongside each participant. Plenty of personal attention is assured each workshop participant.

Early registration is recommended for Don's workshop
as it will fill up fast." Once registered you will receive

Here are just a few comments from her former students:
"I've been painting a long time and have taken many workshops. I'm very fussy so when I ended up learning a great deal in only 3 days I was pleasantly surprised!"

"Jeanette, I just wanted to thank you for a really great workshop. Even though I had a rough time painting, I got so much from those 2 days. I have been painting since and can see some real progress as a result of this last workshop.
Thank you so much. If there's room, I would like to sign up for all of the remaining workshops. I love the 5-day, it's so much fun painting
with different people all week."

"What a great 2 days in your June workshop! Thank you for your wonderful enthusiasm, limiting your wealth of knowledge (as a person can only absorb so much) and for being such a positive spirit!"

Born in 1972 on the island of Madeira hundreds of miles south of Portugal in the North Atlantic Ocean, I immigrated to California in 1975
with my family.
In my mid-twenties I decided to follow my childhood passion for art. I fell in love with master impressionists such as Bongart, Sorrolla, Fechin and particularly the Russian impressionists. It was not until I met master impressionist Ovanes Berberian that I fully understood the endless possibilities of paint.

I have been absorbed by those possibilities ever since.

“The eye may see as a camera ‘sees’,
but the mind’s eye sees an altered, imagined image,
what it wants and hopes to see. It’s that illusive image, uniquely mine, along with a heightened sense of ‘realness’
that I try to express in my paintings.
This world of ours is often a frightening and mysterious place, but it is
filled with scenes and subjects that excite my eye and imagination!
The magical allure of the natural world, and my reverence for it,
compel me to attempt to capture its essence on canvas or paper.”

"Painting with a concept and not by rote"
Painting with soft or oil pastels workshop

This three-day workshop for adults will use the still life as subject.
Students will explore the means to achieve a believable realistic oil
or dry pastel painting through these elements:
Value, color, edges and paint quality (impasto) and brushwork.
Emphasis will be placed on painting with a concept; a plan to prepare
then realize a painting.  Teacher demonstrations and daily critiques
will focus on the relationships of size/ placement of objects on canvas;
the idea of air and space around those objects, color and the role of
temperature when thinking about color (not color theory or color wheel) ;
to think about creating a unified picture  beyond the literal subject matter;
and, finally, to move beyond copying the surface of things.
Photographs are not used.     ........ More Workshop Description

Simply Seeing - Emphasis will be in learning to simplify and organize shapes and color values outdoors.
Demonstrations, supplemented with visual aids,
will help to clarify the key elements discussed.
From a simple statement to a finished painting will be our goal.

Class will begin with a short lecture and samples of my approach along with some of my completed field studies. From there we will go directly on location and begin painting. We will paint on location at all times. If sun is a problem, bring your umbrella (hat, sun block, water/fluids). In case of rain, students should bring photographs or small studies to work from while indoors.

Demonstrations will be part of the program,
but probably not on a daily basis.
What is important to me, as a teacher, is to share whatever knowledge I have with my students. I have no secrets about the way I paint, my philosophy, or my approach. I want to give each student all I can through personal attention, direction, and group discussions. There are no shortcuts in reaching our goals;
just hard work and determination.
